Hair colouring: tips and advice

No science fiction when it comes to hair colouring, but I've been dying my hair for about 10 years now and I have some tips, tricks and advice how to colour your hair. :)

Some og the hair colours I had in last 2 years.

1. Day before colouring
Prepare your hair for colouring. Wash your hair one day before actual colouring, this will get rid of all the dirt in your hair and scalp, this way colour will hold on to your hair better. Don't use any oils, hair sprays etc. after washing. Just shampoo, condition, rinse and let them dry. Also, this way you won't have to wash your hair with a shampoo when you rinse your hair colour out. Hair colour should penetrate for few days before next hair washing anyways (2-3 days). I suggest you wash your hair in the evening and dye them in next day in the morning.

Another tip before hair coloring is to hydrate your hair - use a hair mask, I suggest massaging olive or coconut oil in your hair and scalp, let it sit for at least 2 hours and rinse. Make sure you wash out your hair real well, so there are no excessive oils in your hair, this way hair colour can grasp better.

2. Colouring day
No fancy advice here ... :)

Wear an old T-shirt you won't miss if you accidentaly apply colour on it. Remove all objects and carpets in a place where are you dying your hair. Apply thicker moisturizer around your forehead, on ears and neck, so colour is easier to remove if you accidentally apply it there. Ask someone to help you if you are having hard time doing it yourself. Go to hairdresser if you have no clue what are you doing :).

The easiest way for me to colour my hair is pouring colour into a bowl (which I have only for hair colouring and it's an old plastic bowl) and using a brush for more even application. Of course don't forget to wear pair of gloves to protect you hands.
Like I said, don't shampoo after you rinse the colour out, just use hair conditioner, leave it for few minutes and rinse again.

3. After colouring
Don't wash your hair every day. Not just that it is not healthy for you scalp, but it also rinses and fades your hair colour faster. When you wash your hair, make sure you are using cold to lukewarm water. Cold water prevents excessive rinsing and hot water can also change your hair colour (brown, especially ombre, can become more red, red becomes orange etc.). So, if you want to fade your hair colour, use hot water :). I don't suggest washing your hair while showering if you can't tolerate cold water though :)

Do you have any other tips, tricks or advice for hair colouring? Do you colour your hair?
I hope you find this post helpful and have a nice day. :)

  1. Zanimiv post.
